Scaling and Polishing

The Foundation of a Healthy Smile

Scaling and Polishing is the professional term for a thorough dental cleaning. It is the most important preventive treatment you can receive to maintain a healthy mouth and prevent serious issues like gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis).

Despite diligent brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into a rough, calcified deposit called tartar (calculus), particularly near the gum line. This tartar cannot be removed by home brushing.

At 2th Saver Dental Clinic in Vadodara, our skilled hygienists and dentists use modern ultrasonic scalers to gently and effectively remove all plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. The final polishing step smooths the tooth surface, making it harder for bacteria to stick, leaving your mouth feeling incredibly clean and fresh.

Benefits of This Treatment

Prevents Gum Disease

The primary benefit is removing tartar, the main cause of gingivitis and periodontitis, thus protecting your gums and the supporting bone structure.

Freshens Your Breath

Tartar harbors millions of odor-causing bacteria. Removing these deposits dramatically eliminates chronic bad breath (halitosis).

Stops Tooth Mobility

By keeping the gums and bone healthy, regular cleaning helps maintain a strong foundation, preventing loose teeth caused by advanced gum disease.

Removes Surface Stains

The polishing stage effectively removes external stains caused by tea, coffee, and tobacco, instantly making your teeth brighter and more attractive.

Early Disease Detection

Every cleaning is also a comprehensive check-up, allowing the dentist to spot minor issues like small cavities or cracks before they become major problems.

Enhances Overall Health

Gum health is linked to systemic health. Regular scaling helps reduce oral bacteria that can potentially impact conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Treatment Process

Scaling and Polishing Procedure

Initial Examination

The dentist performs a quick check-up of your entire mouth, assessing the health of your gums and identifying areas with tartar buildup.

Scaling (Tartar Removal)

We use an advanced ultrasonic scaler. This device uses high-frequency vibrations and a gentle stream of water to break down and flush away hard tartar deposits from the tooth surface and below the gum line.

Manual Cleaning

Fine, specialized hand instruments are used to carefully remove any remaining small deposits and smooth the root surfaces where necessary.

Polishing

A soft rubber cup and prophylactic paste are used to polish the tooth surface. This step removes surface stains and leaves the enamel incredibly smooth, making it harder for plaque to adhere in the future.

Treatment FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
We generally recommend professional scaling and polishing every six months. For patients prone to heavy tartar buildup or those with gum disease, more frequent visits may be necessary.
Does professional cleaning hurt?
No. Modern ultrasonic scaling is very gentle. You will feel vibrations and cooling water, but it is typically pain-free. For patients with sensitive teeth, we can use a topical numbing gel if needed.
Will scaling make my teeth loose?
Absolutely not. Tartar often hardens around already damaged or bone-compromised teeth, making it feel like it's holding them in place. Removing the tartar only reveals the underlying condition; it does not cause it.
Is scaling the same as teeth whitening?
No. Scaling and polishing removes external stains, making your teeth appear brighter by restoring their natural color. True teeth whitening involves chemical bleaching to lighten the actual internal tooth color.
Why is my mouth bleeding after cleaning?
If you have existing gum inflammation (gingivitis) due to tartar, the gums may bleed during and immediately after the cleaning as the deep-set bacteria are disturbed. This bleeding stops quickly and is a sign the cleaning was necessary.
